A 2023 study linked manifesting to bankruptcy

In 2023 a team at the University of Queensland surveyed 1,023 people about manifesting. About a third of them believed their thoughts could make outcomes happen, and the lead researcher, Lucas Dixon, built a scale to measure exactly how hard they believed it.

The believers rated themselves more successful than everyone else and expected more success to come. Guess who was also more likely to have been through a bankruptcy? The believers. Same people, same survey, published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

Dixon’s explanation fits on an index card: “If your thoughts control outcomes, then you may not notice or address external issues.” He was talking about money. I read it on my porch and thought about men.

Here is the fear, said flat, the way it sounds at 2am: if it were meant to be, wouldn’t it have happened by now?

The manifestation accounts have an answer ready. They call him your SP, short for specific person, and they say he hasn’t come back because you haven’t assumed hard enough. Fix your self-concept, live in the end, and his readiness shows up on schedule.

The method traces back to Neville Goddard, a lecturer who died in 1972 and taught people to assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled. Goddard never met your person. Neither has the account with the ring light.

Why you can’t assume a man ready

Here’s the part almost nobody talks about. Readiness is made of things only he can do: own what happened, show up the same on a Tuesday as on a lonely Saturday, sit through the hard conversation, put a plan on a calendar. Those are four of the Six Evidences, and every one of them happens with his hands.

You can picture the reunion down to the shirt he’s wearing. Picturing it doesn’t move his calendar. The Queensland team found no objective evidence that manifesting made anyone more successful, and money doesn’t even have moods.

“But I can feel it shifting.” I believe you feel it. I felt Danny coming back for fourteen months straight. A feeling is real information about you. It is not a delivery notice for him.

Am I telling you hope is foolish? I read cards for a living, eleven years now. I’m not the one who knows his life, and I won’t pretend he can’t change.

My mother waited nine years on a man and called it faith. Nine years of turning down invitations in case he called. He never did, and my mother never once called it anything but faith.

I copied the habit. The psychic I believed most told me April, so I turned down a job in Savannah that spring. April came and went, and Savannah is still my word for what that kind of faith costs.

Behavior Over Time will tell you whether he’s ready. You don’t have to produce that answer, and you can’t. Your job is a life worth walking into by the time the answer comes, whichever answer it is.

Trust, the active kind, looks boring from the outside. It looks like answering the friend’s text, renewing the passport, saying yes to the next Savannah when it comes.

If the answer is no, release is a full outcome, not the consolation prize. It’s the one ending you can bring about without his cooperation.
