In 2016, two psychologists at the University of Denver, Scott Stanley and Galena Rhoades, published a study of 315 unmarried couples. They did the thing the date merchants never do. They asked both people.
In about 35 percent of those couples, one partner was considerably more committed than the other, by a full standard deviation or more. The researchers named the two roles the weak link and the strong link.
Guess who reported more conflict? The weak link, which you’d expect. Also the strong link, the one hanging in hardest, and the authors called that noteworthy, because commitment usually makes people fight less.
